Wolf Blitzer delivers the most important breaking news and political, international, and national security stories of the day. Tune to The Situation Room weekdays 5-7pm ET on CNN.
Mexican President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto talks to Wolf Blitzer about the biggest problem in U.S.-Mexican relations. Peña Nieto, who will be inaugurated in four days, is meeting with President Obama today in Washington. The in-depth interview, which also includes discussion of Mexico's drug cartels, airs at 5pm ET on CNN.
Its a historic opportunity as Nieto is inaugurated as he has stated that he would be open to addressing the issues at the border and reciprocal judicial reviews. From the Florence Cassez case to the idea that by opening the borders to legal ingress and egress between the members of NAFTA nations, similar to the Schegen Accord, there is a real possibility to lessen the violence and improve workers rights. The issues surrounding HB56 and the arrests as well as the improvements in working conditions and raising wages in Mexico, soon to be a lower cost point of manufacture than China, are issues that have a direct impact on the US economy as well. When the US fought the drug war of the 1980's part of the solution was to allow passport less travel and relaxed visa standards through legal ports of entry between the US and the Bahamas. This allowed law enforcement to focus its efforts on those attempting to enter through illegal means and separated those with criminal intentions from the rest. If a solution worked in the past it is worth a try again, especially as it has many positive ripple effects on other large issues. It would also be a meaningful tribute to the Mayor who lost her life.
Based on previous PRIs administrations, the restructuring of the Secretariat of Interior (Secretaria de Gobernacion) is a means to secure an Imperialistic Presidency. Even when everybody knows the World is round, if rhe President says it is square, then it is square.
The last US president to have any knowledge about Mexico was LBJ....President Johnson was a personal friend of several Mexican presidents. At the age of 16 I accompanied my grandmother to a reception in Palm Springs California on February 22, 1964. We flew on Air Force One and it was a huge gathering, including Lady Bird Johnson, Dean Rusk and, Pierre Salinger . The Mexican president and his entourage were thrilled and President Johnson showed off his extensive knowledge of Mexico. Things have changed. US Presidents since LBJ have had lttle interest in Mexico and the Mexicans know that.
