BLITZER’S BLOG: Arab Spring, who would have predicted?

(CNN) - It’s truly amazing to see the dramatic changes that occurred in North Africa and the Middle East this year. Gadhafi, bin Laden, al-Awlaki dead. Mubarak in jail. Other despots have fled or are on the verge of being removed from power. Bashar al-Assad brutally fighting for his survival in Syria.

Anyone who would have predicted these changes a year ago would have been dismissed as weird.

BLITZER'S BLOG: Perry, Romney and Reagan

(CNN) - What struck me most about Rick Perry’s verbal assault on Mitt Romney at the CNN Western Republican Debate in Las Vegas was its contrast to the way Ronald Reagan used to conduct himself during debates.

The late president would never have gone after a fellow Republican in such a direct, personal way. If Reagan were going to attack a fellow Republican on something like the alleged hiring of illegal immigrants for lawn service, he would have had his aides handle it. He would have personally stayed away from the charge.

Romney and Cain not conservative enough, says Santorum

(CNN) – The two frontrunners in the race for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination aren't conservative enough, according to rival candidate Rick Santorum.

Santorum said Tuesday that former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney were both lacking the conservative principles voters were looking for.

Programming note: GOP presidential candidates next face off at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday, October 18, in the CNN Western Republican Presidential Debate in Las Vegas, Nevada. Submit your questions for the debate here.

Cain: I can feel the bull's-eye

(CNN) – Herman Cain said Tuesday he could feel the pressure from his fellow 2012 candidates ahead of the CNN Western Leadership Conference Debate in Las Vegas.

"The way it feels is that you got this big bull's-eye on your back, and it keeps getting bigger," Cain told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room."

BLITZER’S BLOG: At tonight’s debate, what happens in Vegas won’t stay in Vegas

Las Vegas (CNN) - On the surface, you wouldn't necessarily know that Las Vegas is in deep economic trouble. There are large crowds everywhere on the Strip. The restaurants are full. The casinos are jumping. The shows are great. I was at the gym at the Venetian Hotel at 6 o'clock this morning and it was packed.

But as good as parts of Las Vegas look on the outside, deep problems become obvious when you take a closer look. Nevada has the highest unemployment and home foreclosure rates in the country - with no quick end in sight.

BLITZER BLOG: Poll numbers should alarm Dems

Las Vegas (CNN) – There are some numbers in our new CNN-ORC International poll that should seriously worry President Obama and the Democrats.

Republicans are right now a lot more enthusiastic about voting in the next election than Democrats. Some 64% of Republicans say they are extremely or very enthusiastic compared to only 43% of Democrats.

McCain to Perry: Get some rest

(CNN) – Sen. John McCain has some words of wisdom for Gov. Rick Perry ahead of Tuesday’s CNN Republican debate: Get some rest.

“Every time I made a serious mistake politically and I’ve made them, it’s been when I’m tired,” McCain said in an interview Friday on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”
