BLITZER'S BLOG: Will Ron Paul run as 3rd party candidate?

(CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is making it clear that he doesn’t think there’s a whole lot of difference on the most important issues between his rival Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama.
“Would there be a change in foreign policy?” Paul asked during an interview on NBC's “Meet the Press.” “No, there would not be.”
He then insisted that there was really no difference between Romney and Obama on entitlement spending, auditing the Federal Reserve and cutting the nation’s debt.
“No,” Paul insisted. “There would not be a significant difference between the two – although on the edges, maybe. … So, no, the regulatory system, the spending, the deficits, the printing of money, they stay the same.”
When I heard that, I again wondered what the Republican congressman from Texas would do if Romney won the Republican nomination. Would he jump on the Romney bandwagon, or would he run as a third-party candidate?
Earlier in the month, I asked Paul whether he could support Romney if he won the nomination.
He replied that none of the Republican candidates was advocating his positions. “So I would have to find out exactly what their positions are and what the platform is that they would be running on,” he said.
I pressed and asked whether it were possible that he would run as a third-party candidate – which he did in 1988, when he was the Libertarian Party presidential candidate. “I haven’t thought about it, and I have no plans to do that,” he said. “So, no, that wouldn’t be in the cards for me.”
I believe Paul. I don’t think he’s spent a lot of time thinking about that third-party contingency. He is focused now on winning the nomination.
But it certainly would be intriguing if Romney did win the nomination and Paul decided to challenge both him and Obama for the presidency.
Would Paul take more votes away from the Republican or Democratic candidate?
Since he’s a Republican, the immediate assumption is that he would hurt the Republican nominee and maybe even ensure Obama’s re-election.
But you could make a case that Paul also appeals to many isolationist and deficit-cutting Democrats who are deeply worried about Obama’s economic policies.
It’s all very hypothetical but still a fascinating topic for political junkies like me to ponder.

If Ron Paul doesn't win the Republican nomination I hope he runs independent and may get my vote even if he doesn't. This is his last chance at the presidency and the best chance our country has right now to make a turn in the right direction. We know who the Democrats are bringing, and the other Republicans running are only shades off of Obama. Either way we'll have massive spending for foreign affairs and little hope for real cuts in federal spending, continuing down the path to economic collapse.

In 2008 RP said he would NOT run as an independent (and he didn't), and I don't this cycle being any different. With that said, if RP loses the primary, I will consider this Presidential race to be over as who wins will simply not matter.
He might as well run as an independent if he doesn't win the nomination, because he is the only guy myself and all the other Ron Paul supporters will vote for no matter what. There is no other candidate-Democrat, Republican, or Independent-that I will vote for this election cycle. The reason so many of us have become diehard Ron Paul supporters is because we realize he is the only candidate that grasps the severity of the monetary, debt, and financial crisis we are in, and he is the only candidate serious about trying to fix them.
This 3rd PARTY crap is pure propaganda. you guys tried this trick in 2008 and its not gonna work. Ron Paul is a 12 term congressman, he worked with Ronald Reagan and he is taking the republican party back to its roots. Wolf, you are a clown.
Age is just a number. The man has the egreny of someone twenty years younger than him though. I've seen pictures of Paul riding a bike on a twelve mile ride. Hardly the activity of someone of who you would expect is too old or is dying.And the just for record, I've seen him shirtless in a pool with his great grand daughter and he looked pretty damn fit to me and I'm 23.Could he die while in office? Of course but so could Obama or any other candidate so the age argument is ridiculous and especially in this case.
This is an interesting question, although I do not agree that Ron Paul is an "isolationist." He believes the role of government is to protect the liberty of it's citizens. If that means going to war, he will go to war. If that means offering letters of marque to bring suspected terrorist suspects to justice, so be it. Just because he does not endorse the empire mentality of endless war and does not ignore collateral damage (the killing of thousands of innocent women and children) as being in the best interest of U.S. liberty, does not make him an isolationist.
This is an interesting question though, although it would not be preferable for RP to lose the Republican nomination because the two parties do everything in their power to exclude third parties, including the MSM they have in their back pocket who cannot seem to comprehend the possibility of anything unlikely happening in politics and seem more hell bent on predicting the winner (or should I say selecting the winner) than they do on offering honest unbiased insights into each candidates positions and allowing equal time to all candidates.
But in any case, I think Wolf makes a good point that Ron Paul definitely appeals to many liberals and republicans and I don't think their is a lesser of two evils with respect to Romney vs. Obama. So I say, if RP doesn't win the Republican nomination...heck yes...bring on the third party...preferably libertarian just because they would probably have the least amount of trouble getting on the ballot in all 50 states and have some existing infrastructure at least.
Equal time to all candidates is not realistic or even desirable, but time in proportion to standing in the polls would be a heck of a lot better than Ron Paul is getting right now.
We can only hope he does run as a 3rd party candidate.

There you again, Wolf. There you go again. Please stop pretending that you can predict the future. Please allow the people of the US to know and freely elect their own leaders. You can do this by asking intelligent questions about each candidate's positions. You can give them all equal time.
You can do this, Wolf. But instead, you ask silly questions of a Presidential Candidate like: "If you don't win, who of your competitors would you support?"
You can be better than that, Wolf. You can serve the highest interests of the people of this country.
I have a feeling if he does run independently, he will win and they will just fix the election. He is really the only choice, I can easily see him beating both the established parties combined especially if voter turnout spiked near 100%. Remember only about 30% vote on average, because 70% of the country thinks the two parties are the same anyway (they are). What happens at 100%? You get pretty much 70% in favor of the alternative.

You can be assured that if Ron Paul does not win the nomination, that the Ron Paul supporters will not be voting for any other Republican presidential nominee or Obama. They will either vote third party or write him in. The latter is what I plan to do if Ron Paul is not the Republican nominee!

As a Canadian looking in on your elections and not being partial to any party i can say that Ron Paul knows what it takes to fix your country. People may not like what has to be done but a solution is needed now so you don't end up like Greece later. All the other candidates don't get the severity of the problem.

But for the addition of the inapplicable "isolationist" label, this is a valid pondering of the current state of affairs.
Ron Paul, not seeking a House reelction, would conceivably have nothing to lose by running third party in the event of another nominee, all of whom he has rejected as good alternatives for one reason or another.
I think the best the Republican Party should hope for here is a Ron Paul nomination. He is the only candidate with the moral high ground to challenge Obama on all the issues.
Why do we keep hearing that Ron Paul can't get into the debates as an independent? John Anderson and Ross Perot were both able to and weren't those debates much more interesting and informing. It is usually based on polling numbers that Dr. Paul should be able to achieve. I say if he does not get the Republican Party nod, he HAS to go independent – to keep the rEVOLution going! What is there to lose? We would support him.
Just because of all of the right choices and votes that he has done for all of us average american citizens in his extensive political career, Ron Paul deserves the Presidency of this country. A true patriot unlike any other politician. If you look at all the things he's done since 1971, and for all the right reasons, we owe him gratitude and thanks. This is just the latest attempt to undermine Ron Paul and prove to neutral observers that CNN is giving him coverage. Talk of him going third party and splitting the conservative vote is all about reducing his credibility in the Republican Party.
Why would he, he has a really good chance of winning the republican nomination. He has some money and usually is close to third in a modest amount of the polls. Once people realize he can win, well who knows??
You know what? Once you look at the field of candidates there is not hard decision at all. Ron Paul would be the ONLY vote that would be a vote that wasn't for the present and past status. The others are ALL different various personalities of the same agenda. And very deeply rooted in politics at it's worst. Yes even Herman Cain whom boast about not being a politician like the others. He is and has been more in line with the political status as any other. With the exception of Ron Paul whom has and will prove loyal to American principle at it's core.

Ron Paul is not treated fairly by the media. It is quite apparent. Even today I heard TAKE FIVE on FOX mention everyone but Ron Paul. And this has not been an isolated incident, since I listen closely to the news and follow the debates.
I am in the military and I support RP even stronger than before. I hope he makes a 3rd party run for the presidency. Maybe it is not the right time for winning, but building the base for Libertarian ideals is the right time. The Fed should go. Can you really justify an unaudited agency that prints money without any backing? Are we really right to police the world?
IMO, the biggest reason he is treated with contempt is b/c he refuses to give Israel some special status. AIPAC is a powerful lobbying machine and they want US dollars...my tax dollars! No special status. We will be your friend, but no special status.

Not so sure about that Daveugber. I think RP can pull a strong Democratic base, too. He has a strong message against corporate welfare, and in essence, he believes in true liberty. His opposition to the drug war and interventionist policies can appeal to many Ds. If many of those Ds can get beyond the fact that big government is causing much of the problem with inflation and promoting the housing problem, etc. then he could pull a large base of support. His integrity will pull weight with many who just want something refreshing. I think this is how Obama pulled off the last election. Everyone saw him as a non status quo person who had a good heart and wanted to do the right thing.
I am a Ron Paul supporter, and if he doesn't win the nomination, I fully intend to push to get him to run third party.
If the Republicans lose to Obama as a result of a third party Paul run, it would serve the Party right for backing a spineless, plastic banker buddy, instead of a true Constitutional conservative like Ron Paul.
Besides, it's not as if Romney would actually change very much policy-wise if elected. We would get much of the same thing we've gotten with Bush and Obama – more wreckless spending, more wars, less civil liberties.

Pathetic. Ron Paul win's the Ohio straw poll this last weekend by a land slide – over 50% of the votes – and no major article on CNN other than this garbage talking about running as a Libertarian. Wolf – Why did CNN make such a HUGE deal out of Herman Cain when he won the Florida Straw poll, but you and your team turn away when Ron Paul performs well in a poll – especially one as critical as Ohio. Mitt Romney won the Ohio Straw poll this last Summer, but was crushed in it this past weekend. It's time to start being honest and begin referring to Ron Paul as a top tier candidate.

Reddog I have to agree with your statement that the Republicans will not allow him to get nominated on their ticket. Ron Paul just wouldn't turn in the favors, that they want to take full advantage of once their man/woman is in office, if they were to get elected as President. I believe if he ran as an Independent he wouldn't win either. It's difficult to get the public to vote off the ticket (either Democrat or Republicans.) I think part of that reasoning behind that is they think that they will are "throwing away" their vote. Past elections show very few people vote for any Independent or other political party. I hope hope he does stay in for the long haul. He is the best candidate out there so far. He also seem true to his word.
Anyone but the big two! Just too bad the deck is stacked. As for Ron, I hope he realizes there's a legitimate roll for gov't.

He's not an isolationist. He just wants to go to war only when congress declares it. That is what the founders what. That is what the Constitution lays out. He wants to trade with people, talk with people, and be friends with people. How is that isolationist? That is what James Madison advised. That is what Thomas Jefferson advised. That is what George Washington advised
I'm very confident Ron Paul will win the republican nomination. Mr. Blitzer's questioning seems to be an attempt to undermine Ron Paul's efforts. Exactly what the press has tried to do this entire cycle.

We all know Ron Paul has zero chance of becoming the candidate for the GOP, or even a snowballs chance in hell for the White House. Mitt Romney will be the GOP candidate, like it or not. It's a weak field, we might as well focus on 2016. Maybe we will get lucky and see Chris Christie run in 2016. I don't see Democrats loving Biden like Obama.

I've lost all confidence in the whole government. Ron Paul is the only one that isn't paid off and offers the right ideas this country needs right now. It's so obvious the way the establishment media trys to downplay his candidacy. We need someone not republican and not democrat, that is for sure. I think Ron Paul has a real chance if he dumped the Republocrat ticket completely, ran as an Independent Libertarian candidate and aligned himself with the Occupy Wall Street/Occupy America movement as their candidate of choice. He has stood firm over the past 30 years with practically word for word the positions that this movement espouses. In addition he could align with and focus enhance the OWS movement's position over the past few weeks of delivering a protest vote in the next presidential election to not vote for a republican or a democrat, but vote independent for all candidates in all elections. I think Ron Paul could make history as the first president elected from an independent party.
I'd be extremely disappointed if he didn't. He made the announcement not to run for congress again, right after claiming to go all in. This legally frees him up to do a 3rd party run, whereas he couldn't last time around. I know he's had problems with 3rd party runs in the past, but everyone I know who got in the party because of him are hanging on by a thread. After the way we've been treated, most of us want nothing more than to tear down the party if he doesn't get the nom. A third party run would be the best way to do that. But if he doesn't, that will still be the focus of a lot of people out there. And then there's the fact that more than half of the RP supporters I talk to won't get involved because they don't want that R next to their name. He needs to go independent, or he won't have truly gone "all in."

If CNN and the rest of mainstream media gave Ron Paul the TV/online coverage he actually deserves, running 3rd party wouldn't even be in the picture. Instead you ignore him during the debates and online, and when you do involve him, it's to ask him pointless questions like this instead of talking about the real issues with Ron Paul.
I disagree with the guy on pretty much everything, but he's the only one on both sides who permits himself to be honest, even when it makes him unelectable. If every candidate would represent themselves in that way, elected officials would be a lot more accountable and a lot less of a disappointment when in office. 'What you see is what you get' is what's missing in modern politics.
I'm sure he would run as a third party candidate if he thought he had a chance of winning instead of ruining the changes of the GOP.
Strategically there is no sense in even addressing this now. His focus is on getting the GOP nomination. RP is intelligent enough to see that.
The real difference bteewen Ron Paul supporters and other candidates support is that we are active, and the other campaigns have passive support. We go out of our way to support everything about our guy because that is the only way we have to spread the word. The media is not covering him, we don't have $20 million in the bank to run ads. We have less than a year to get out the vote, but we will.I donate money, put stickers on my cars, hand out pamphlets, talk to my friends/family about him, and I am going to set help work an info booth at a gun show this month before this campaign, I've never done more than cast a vote. I'm into the message, I don't care if he wins or not. If he is the next Barry Goldwater, and in 8 or 10 years we have a new crop of libertarian Republicans running for office because they became inspired by his campaign this year, then we have accomplished something.

I would personally support (with my vote as well as campaign contributions) Ron Paul running as a third party candidate if the Republicans fail to nominate him. At age 76, this is clearly Dr. Paul's final campaign and I would like to see him continue to spread the ideals of liberty for as long as he can on a national stage. I think he would take votes equally from President Obama and Governor Romney (should he get the nomination). Honestly, I don't believe there's much difference at all between the President and Romney so it doesn't concern me that a third party could throw the election for one side or the other.

I'm really tired of Ron "holier-then-thou" Paul. His policies would destroy the country he purports to love.
Only if you're a government employee, welfare recipient, wholly reliant on the federal government to take care of you. Getting rid of 90% of the government wouldn't hurt the nation, it would make us stronger, wealthier, and would rid us of parasites who feed off the 50% who actually pay taxes.
What's going on? Simply put: the piggies at the trugoh know that Ron Paul is serious about putting K Street out of business and ending spending on a fundamental, radical level. I don't know how much he'd actually be able to accomplish but you can bet nobody wants to find out. That they are going to such lengths to marginalize and silence the man speaks volumes. I'm not raging Ron Paul fan but it's pretty clear they're pulling out all the stops to keep him from going anywhere.

If you and and your co-workers at CNN gave Ron Paul the TV/online coverage that he deserves, we wouldn't even need to be asking this question. Instead, mainstream media ignores him; and when they do give him coverage, it's over stupid questions like this, instead of the real topics that you discuss with all the other candidates.
Ron Paul will never, ever, ever be President. And it's not because the media ignores him. It's because most people think he's a fruitcake. A very old fruitcake.

He is a vetran, sportsman, family person and doctor, 12 time congressman...what are u, could not manage to keep your wife happy – probably had couple of divorces, living of free on govt money or advertisement money with a corporate job.Start being productive for once in your life and then you can talk abt ron paul.
Whatever works. I'm to the point where I won't vote for republican or democrat ever again. It's time for REAL change.
