(CNN) – A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey Wednesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The epicenter was 16 kilometers (9 miles) south of the town of Van, the USGS said, and its depth was 4.8 kilometers (3 miles). The quake hit at 9:23 p.m. (2:23 p.m. ET), it said.
At least 18 buildings have collapsed in Van, including two hotels and one school, according to Turkish state broadcaster TRT.
