Navy Yard shooter "absolutely should not have gotten a clearance"

Based on law enforcement information, a security clearance attorney says Aaron Alexis should not have had security access because of his arrest record. CNN's Brian Todd pieces together what we know about the Navy Yard shooter and investigates how he got that clearance.

I thank it was/is irresponsible of Mr. Blitzer and others for saying Alexis should not have gotten a security clearance because of his type of discharge. I was discharged from the air force at the governments convince 39-16. the next week I was hired by Hughes aircraft company, with a secret clearance and when I quit seven years later I had a top secret clearance. I went on to serve 34 years as an elected official. I said that to say this, there are many reasons why a person is discharged early from the military and if employers were to take you guys lead, many good citizens would not have gotten a chance to contribute to this country outside of the military. Alexis had a mental problem and something pushed him over the edge, that is what you people should be looking at. There was a time when somebody said they were hearing voices etc., they were put in a mental ward for evaluation, and not left to walk the streets. The other question should be, just how long does it take to get a security clearance and for what level. This is a mental health issue and not a gun control issue.
