CNN's Erin McPike speaks with families that are remembering lost loved ones as Oklahoma starts to recover.
RELATED STORY: Families remember Oklahoma tornado victims
I think Wolf Blitzer should remember that last summer a derecho killed 22 people in Maryland, DC, and a few other areas and there was never a siren blown and local news stations failed to even break to report the life threatening storm. After the storm, numerous elderly residents died in their apartments because the weather was extremely hot and power was out for over a week. CNN never reported one moment about this horrific storm and yet Wolf can suggest to Oklahoma that they need better outcomes to their storms. Oklahoma did remarkably well alerting communities so they could take cover, but DC and Maryland didn't bother to alert it's citizens before tragedy hit. Let these states make their own recommendations, report the news, and support these communities, but be very careful about what you say. Next time question Maryland and DC about warning it's citizens.
The June 2012 Mid-Atlantic and Midwest derecho was one of the most destructive and deadly fast-moving severe thunderstorm complexes in North American history. The progressive derecho tracked across a large section of the Midwestern United States and across the central Appalachians into the mid-Atlantic states on the afternoon and evening of June 29, 2012, and into the early morning of June 30, 2012. It resulted in 22 deaths, widespread damage and millions of power outages across the entire affected region. The storm prompted the issuance of four separate severe thunderstorm watches by the Storm Prediction Center. A second storm in the late afternoon caused another watch to be issued across Iowa and Illinois.
